DEL RIO, TX — A new community initiative is working to ensure that every high school girl in Del Rio can experience the magic of prom, regardless of her financial situation. “Fairy Godmother’s Closet” has officially launched, aiming to provide stunning prom dresses and accessories at no cost to students who may need a little extra support getting ready for their big night.

The program, spearheaded by coordinator MJ Ybarra, is designed to be more than just a donation center. With newly secured county support, Ybarra is working to create a dedicated, boutique-style shopping space at the Tony Faz Annex where girls can browse and select their dream attire with dignity and confidence.

“I saw the need and ran with it,” Ybarra said. “Like I said super, small scale for homecoming but knew I could serve more with the right support.”

While the current focus is on the upcoming prom season, Ybarra has larger plans for the initiative’s role in the community.

“My vision would be to have it year round- hoco, prom and dress for success (for women in general needing that support for a job interview, court etc),” she said.

With prom scheduled early this year in April, the initiative is moving quickly to gather inventory. The community is encouraged to help bring this vision to life by donating gently used prom dresses and accessories, including shoes and jewelry. Those interested in arranging a donation or who have questions are encouraged to message the organizers directly to coordinate.

The boutique shopping experience is scheduled to run from April 1 through April 23 at the Tony Faz Annex. To ensure a personalized experience for every guest, students are asked to reserve their spot in advance.
