On Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump used his Truth social platform to endorse Tony Gonzalez, representative of Texas’s 23rd congressional district, and Del Rio’s U.S. House rep. In his post, POTUS writes Gonzalez is a “terrific Representative” and that he gives his “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election.”
Rep. Gonzalez most recently stopped by Del Rio in October, where he met with county commissioner Juan Carlos Vasquez to gift an American flag to be flown at the Antonio Faz Annex center. He also toured recently constructed efficiency-style homes built for struggling veterans, a project Gonzalez helped fund.
Ballotpedia.org identifies the March 3, 2026 republican primary as a battleground primary. In 2024’s Republican primary, Gonzalez narrowly won over Brandon Herrera in a runoff vote, %50.6 -%49.4. Running again in 2026 are both Gonzalez and Herrera. In 2024’s general election, Gonzalez beat out Democrat Santos Limon %62.3 – %37.7, or by 70,000 votes. Limon, a graduate of Del Rio High School, has entered the Democratic race again and is expected to face Gonzalez in November.
