With assets now worth a quarter of a billion dollars and 27,000 members and counting, Del Rio-based financial institution, Border Federal Credit Union, opens its newest location in Eagle Pass, Texas. The branch mark’s Border FCU’s fifth location after one existing Eagle Pass branch, two in Del Rio, and one at Laughlin Air Force Base, its original service site. Branch staff, board members, and Eagle Pass dignitaries attended a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday to commemorate the new building.
CEO Maria Martinez opened by expressing her gratitude to each level of development supporting the mission of Border FCU.
"We’re very thankful to y’all…This is a beautiful building. We’re very lucky to have this." Martinez continued, "The main thing is that we’re going to be able to serve this community. We, the Credit Union, have been known for servicing underserved communities." And she’s right.
In 2010 the U.S. Department of the Treasury certified Border FCU as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). CDFIs are driven by their mission to support economically disadvantaged communities. BFCU, additionally, offers products and services tailored to Hispanic and Immigrant communities as a ‘Juntos Avanzamos!’ credit union.’ With the financial security of its largely Hispanic membership base in their hands, Border FCU takes its role in the communities it serves seriously.

"This strengthens the commitment we have with Eagle Pass," said Abram Rodriguez, BFCU Marketing Director. "There’s not really a financial institution on this side of [Eagle Pass]. So by us opening doors on this side of town, we’re giving access to so many more financial features to people who have not had access to these features that Border FCU offers."
Rodriguez continued, "We are a not-for-profit financial institution, we are a cooperative. Adding to Eagle Pass, investing in the community, is something the members wanted to see."
As a not-for-profit cooperative, BFCU is owned by its members, and its primary purpose is not to generate profit, but to benefit its members through shared services.

Maverick County Judge, Ramsay English Cantu, had high praise for the vision of CEO Maria Martinez. "You’ve been at the helm of this organization for [30 years]. Let me just say your leadership, along with the leadership of the board, have taken this institution to a highly reputable [level], of course, serving the numerous counties that are being served," Judge Cantu remarked.
Originally chartered in 1954, 2025 marks 71 years of service to the members of Border Federal Credit Union.
